When it comes to pet food, the “cat”—or “dog” is out of the bag, and the pet food industry is now exposed.
I am always suspicious of lists that claim to name the best pet food because I usually determine the list was sponsored by advertising from Purina or Friskies. Also, if a research company doesn’t understand what it is researching, there are abound to be blind spots and discrepancies.
I found extensive recent research performed on 1,759 cat food formulas and 2,223 dog food formulas. Research was culled from 11,000 experts in the food industry including veterinarians, trainers, behaviorists, university researchers, authors and pet owners. Criteria included ingredients, fillers (corn, soy, wheat, grain or flour), sugars and beet pulp, by-products and sauces, preservatives, recall history, ingredient sources, species appropriateness, the best ratio of protein, fat and carbohydrates, and the country in which the food is manufactured.
Out of 1,759 cat food formulas, only 145 were found to be produced by a trustworthy company with high-quality, risk-free ingredients.
Out of 2,223 dog food formulas, less than 6% or 134 formulas could be recommended for high-quality, risk-free ingredients.
